Dealing with Phobia & Irrational Fears

Phobia can be referred to an anxiety disorder defined by a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation. (Wikipedia)

The word Phobia was emerged from the Greek word “phobos” which means: fear or horror. The phobia results into a rapid extreme irrational experience of fear. It is usually unexplainable and exaggerated fear of an object or situation which is unlikely to cause any harm.

A major difference between phobia and fear is that, phobia inflicts a significant level of distress and it’s an intense dose of fear and anxiety. According to Healthline.com, specific phobias typically falls within five main categories:

  • Fears related to animals (cockroaches, dogs, etc.)
  • Fears related to natural environment (heights, darkness etc.)
  • Fears related to blood, injury or medical issues (injections, broken bones etc.)
  • Fear related to specific situations (driving, taking pictures, falls etc.)
  • Others (choking, loud noises, drowning etc.)

Dealing with Phobia

Phobias are treated with a. combination of therapy and medications duly administered by psychologist or qualified mental health professional. This treatment helps you change your thoughts and feelings about the object or situation, so that you can learn to control your reactions.

The goal is to improve your quality of life so that you’re no longer hindered or distressed by your fear. Medications that may help reduce uncomfortable feelings of anxiety and fears.
