According to indiatimes.com, the older couples get, the more similar they look, because people who are in close contact with each other tend to mimic each other’s facial expressions. Also, the happier the couples, the more similar their physical features. A conspicuous characteristic you’ll see in look-alike couple is the facial resemblances. They appear as if they were originally siblings. It is commonly said that a man tends to marry his mother just as a woman tends to marry her father; It’s more likely for a man’s wife to share similar features with his mother as time progresses.
It’s actually a natural human tendency to be subconsciously attracted to what you know and is comfortable with — including the facial features of a potential mate, says time.com. Below are a few reasons why couples look-alike.
1). Genetic Makeup
Globalnews.ca suggests that “most people picked a spouse from within their local community, and that person often had the same ancestry. Over many generations, this affinity for similar mates has created a genetic structure in the population that has the potential to bias the results of genetic studies.”
People will always be attracted to others of the same genetic makeup by reason of social, cultural, or environmental common ground. It’s absolutely normal that you’ll find genetically matched folks married together. That makes sense when Justin Lehmiller suggests that we are attracted to those who share similar traits with our parents because they are comforting and familiar.
2). Likes Attract Like
Research shows that couples may be initially attracted to partners with identical personalities. In reality, the heart will always desire someone who matches its owner, and as a result, increases the chances of both couples staying longer, together.
This is one very good reason that Bustle.com refers to as assortative mating – a style in dating where we actively date people that are similar to us — in age, heights, likes & dislikes, facial looks, education level, etc.
“When people see someone who resembles them there’s an automatic trust that takes place in the brain, and for someone seeking trust as one of their most important qualities in a partner, they’ll be subconsciously, naturally attracted to people who resemble them.”
3. Shared Experiences
As couples grow old together, their shared life experiences such as happiness, joy, or excitement are expressed in their facial expressions as they tend to adjust and conform with their partners’. They develop identical muscles related to smiling and laughter. Robert Zajonc, a psychologist at the University of Michigan suggests that a long life shared experiences between couples would make them look more similar and alike.
Zajonc, in his experiment, matched portraits of married couples based on their facial resemblance. The results showed that the couples had grown to look more like each other over time and couples who had been together for a considerable number of years (25years) were amazingly paired together.
4. Similar Cultures, Values & Traditions
According to indiantimes.com, couples belonging to a related caste, faith, or religion have greater likelihoods of getting married, which may be the reason for the similarity in their looks. People from identical economic and social backgrounds would have similar food habits, cultures, and traditions, which would make them look comparable to their spouses.
